Corning is investing into raw materials production for solar industry
On December 15 Dow Corning Corporation has announced the decision to invest up to $3 billion into the most important raw materials production for solar industry.
As reported by the PR department of the corporation, scheduled is the output of highly pure monosilane, a special gas used when producing film photogalvanic modules and liquid crystal displays. So Dow Corning has an intention to build a monosilane production plant in Hemlock, Michigan as an expansion of existing polycrystalline silicon production plant.
The construction of the new plant will be carried out by two companies, being the parts of the corporation: Hemlock Semiconductor Corp. and Hemlock Semiconductor LLC. Clarksville, Tennessee will accommodate another plant of polycrystalline silicon producing the main material for most photogalvanic cells production.
Dow Corning is a transnational chemical corporation founded in 1943, having its head office in Midland, Michigan. It specializes in silicon chemistry. It is equally owned by Dow Chemical and Corning, Inc. Annual turnover in 2007 made about $5 billions. The company employs 10 thousand people.
Russian Federation is being actively prepared to polycrystalline silicon production. In November 2008 Giprosintez design agency has finished the development of working documentation for Abakan plant, producing trichlorosilane being the main component for polycrystalline silicon production.
