PCS PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY

Polycrystalline silicon production is a multipurpose complex comprising various plants with equipment and capacity depending upon selected technology and end product quality.

Synthesis of chlorosilanes is done by TG silicon hydrochlorination in fluidized-bed reactor as follows:

Si + 3HCl = SiHCl3 + H2

The structure of the reactor along with process procedures allow to use up to 98-99% HCl with 90% TCS output.

Vapor-gas mixture purification to remove suspended solids (silicon powder, solid metal chlorides, polysilane-chlorides) using cyclones, filters and “wet” methods.

Chlorosilanes condensation using heat exchangers running under low temperature. Vent gases are compressed and recycled after separation and purification.

Chlorosilanes are separated by rectification method. Chlorosilane mixture is separated into trichlorosilane to be routed to hydrogen deposition of polysilicon, and silicon tetrachloride to be hydrogen-reduced to trichlorosilane.

Polysilicon is produced by reduction of trichlorosilane (chemical vapor deposition (CVD)).

The following main reactions take place when silicon is recovered from TCS and deposited:

SiHCl3 + H2 = Si + SiCl4 + 2HCl

4SiHCl3 = Si + 3SiCl4 + 2H2

Chlorosilanes are condensed from the vapor-gas mixture at low temperatures by means of vent gas recovery system. Reduced chlorosilanes are separated into recovered hydrogen chloride and recovered silanes that are re-used in the process.
